지난 2010년도는 다사다난한 해였다. 유럽의 재정위기로 전 세계 경제가 흔들린 가운데, 세계 경제 위기극복을 위한 G20 정상회의가 한국에서 개최되면서 한국의 국가위상이 제고되었다. 그간 마무리 짓지 못하던 한·미 FTA 추가협상도 타결되었으며, 주식시장도 3년 만에 2000선을 복귀했다. 한편 북측의 어뢰공격으로 군 사상 최대 규모의 참사로 기록된 천안함 사건에 이어 북한의 연평도 포격으로 6.25 이후 처음으로 민간인이 사망하는 사건이 발생하면서 국가안보 위기가 고조되었다. 지난 4월 구제역 종식 이후 8개월 만에 재발한 구제역은 백신접종에도 불구하고 전국으로 확산되면서 수백만마리의 가축이 살처분을 당했다. 총리실의 민간인 불법사찰 논란이 일면서 정부에 대한 국민들의 불신이 가중되기도 했다. 지난 2010년 한 해를 뜨겁게 달군 10대 이슈를 선별해 영어로 정리해본다.
2010 was an eventful year. Europe fell into a financial crisis that shook the world economy, and Korea confirmed its place as a major world player by hosting the G20 Summit for finding a solution to the global economic crisis. The unfinished negotiations for the KORUS FTA were finally completed, and the Korean stock market reached 2000 points for the first time in 3 years.
2010 was also a year of tension on the Korean peninsula, with North Korea's attack on the Cheonan being recorded as the most damaging of its kind in the history of the divided Koreas, and the attack on Yeonpyeong Island causing the first civilian casualties since the end of the Korean War. After the foot-and-mouth disease was considered eradicated in April, it returned a mere 8 months later, stronger and resistant to vaccination. As a result, millions of cattle were slaughtered all over Korea. In addition, citizens' trust of governmental agencies plummeted as the Prime Minister's Office fielded accusations of illegal investigations of civilians.
